How did Michael van Gerwen get into darts?

Van Gerwen, from Boxtel in the Netherlands, made his name as a teenager. He won the BDO Winmau World Masters in 2006, and at the 2007 Masters of Darts, aged 17, he hit a televised nine-dart finish against Raymond van Barneveld. That stood as the youngest televised nine-darter until Luke Littler hit one in January 2024.

In January 2014 he beat Peter Wright 7-4 to win his first PDC World Championship at 24. That made him the youngest world champion until Littler's win in 2025. He also took the world number one ranking that day.

How many titles has Michael van Gerwen won?

As of October 2026 his majors include three World Championships, seven Premier League titles and six World Grand Prix titles. Overall totals differ between sources depending on which events are counted as majors. His most recent major is the World Series of Darts Finals in 2025, where he beat Littler 11-7. In 2026 he won the Bahrain and Nordic Darts Masters, both World Series events, and was runner-up for the Netherlands at the World Cup of Darts.
