Who is Michael Smith?
Michael Smith is a professional darts player from St Helens in Merseyside, born in 1990. He throws right-handed and won the PDC World Youth Championship in 2013.
He reached several major finals before his first major title. He finished runner-up to Michael van Gerwen in the 2018 Premier League and the 2019 World Championship, and to Peter Wright at the 2020 Masters. His first major title came at the 2022 Grand Slam of Darts, where he beat Nathan Aspinall 16-5 in the final.
How did Michael Smith win the World Championship?
Smith beat Michael van Gerwen 7-4 in sets in the 2023 World Championship final at Alexandra Palace, in his third world final. In the second set he hit a nine-dart finish moments after van Gerwen missed double 12 for his own nine-darter. That leg is widely described as one of the best ever played. He became world number one after the win.
In 2024 he partnered Luke Humphries to win the World Cup of Darts for England in Frankfurt, beating Austria 10-6 in the final.
How has Michael Smith played in 2026?
Injuries have shaped his recent seasons, including arthritis in his throwing hand and ankle problems that needed cortisone injections. In April 2026 he reached the Players Championship 11 final in Milton Keynes, losing 8-7 to Beau Greaves. In June 2026 he dropped out of the PDC top 32 for the first time since 2013, and he was still outside the top 32 as of October 2026.
What darts does Michael Smith use?
Smith has been sponsored by Shot since 2023 and plays a 24g Shot signature dart. Shot's current Michael Smith design is the Series II, which Shot says was developed in collaboration with him. It has a 90% tungsten, straight barrel with a subtle taper and centre-weighted balance. The ring grip has tighter rings through the centre and precision-milled rings at the front, with a sandblasted finish. Shot supplies it with 30mm black Turbo points, red Michael Smith Koi carbon shafts and Michael Smith Series II flights in the No. 6 standard shape.
